The oldest goalkeeper in the world?

January 10th, 2012

Is this the world’s oldest keeper?

Colin Lee is 72 years old and has been playing the game since he was 6-years-old. Over the past 37 years, he’s helped set up six teams.

Mr Lee, who lives in Northampton in England still plays every week.

He said, ‘I’ve been told you have to be mad to be a goalie, so I guess I must be bordering on that as I’ve done it for so long.

‘I like chucking myself around like a lunatic. I’ve had lots of bruises but amazingly I’ve never had any serious football injuries in nearly 70 years.’

Mr Lee says he used to play in any position he could ‘just to get a game’, but started playing in goal in 1949 and never looked back.

The pensioner usually plays at least 20 minutes every game, adding that he was ‘creaking a bit’ after playing a full 90 minutes recently.

‘I still feel like a six-year-old boy at heart when I play, although my body tells me differently,’ he says.

‘I want to continue playing football for as long as I can.’

You’re putting the rest of us to shame Colin, but keep it up!

Thanks Colin, really thought about taking a rest now that I’m 56, but having read your story, I’ll give that a rethink!
