Sir Alex Ferguson: ‘I rejected £100,000 deal for Joe Hart’

February 20th, 2012

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he passed up the chance to sign Manchester City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart for just £100,000.

Hart joined the Blues from Shrewsbury for £600,000 in 2006 and has since developed into his country’s number one, as well as one of the finest young goalkeepers in Europe.

The Scottish manager – who is currently trying to help his £18 million goalkeeper David de Gea settle in at Old Trafford – says he had the chance to sign Hart in a cut price deal but decided against doing so.

“I could have bought Joe Hart for £100,000 so we all make mistakes,” the 70-year-old told the BBC.

“I’ve no doubt [that Hart will be England goalkeeper for the next 10 years]. If you look at the England goalkeeper situation for the last 20 years, I would think he’s easily the best.”

Hart became City’s undisputed first-choice at the beginning of the 2010/2011 season, taking over from Shay Given.
